Wigan did themselves a favour as they overcame fellow strugglers Oswestry in what was ultimately a tense encounter at Douglas Valley. Facing a stiff breeze Wigan dominated the first half and recovered from an early setback when Oswestry intercepted 60 metres out and raced away to the line. The lead proved short lived as scrum half Adam Dwyer scampered over on the blind side following a line out drive to level the scores at 5-5. Then, with the clock on 20 minutes, flanker Max Livesey broke away just inside the Oswestry half and left the defence trailing in his wake to cross for 10-5. Wigan were now dominating possession and wings Pat Melling and Mike Bristow both looked dangerous. It was no surprise when the latter added Wigan's third try as he stretched over in the corner following good work from Adam Dwyer and Josh Beever. On a rare visit to Wigan's half Oswestry reduced the arrears to 15-8 with a penalty just before the break.
The second period then proved somewhat frustrating for Wigan as they failed to capitalise on good field position and let Oswestry off the hook with series of penalties. Finally, the bonus point was secured as Mike Bristow finished a cross field handling move by touching down in the corner. Entering the final quarter at 20-8 any hopes of a stress free finale for the fans were dashed as Oswestry were gifted a converted try from a charge down, gained confidence, and went in search of a levelling try. The highlight of a tense period was a great break from defence by Tom Wilson followed by a finely judged kick to touch.
Though Wigan made up ground on Anselmians, and now trail them by 8 points, they still have a lot do if they are to avoid the drop. They now take a week off before travelling to Southport.
