A first half spell where the away side scored 3 tries in 5 minutes gave Wigan a long awaited first win under new head coach, Martin Scott. Oswestry opened the scoring after 10 minutes but their lead was short lived. Shortly after the restart, Lee Roby galloped through the middle of the park, carrying defenders with him and created the space for Sammy Makinson to finish in the corner. Oswestry added to their own misery by muffing the kick off, resulting in a Wigan scrum on halfway. Wigan took it wide, with Adam Dwyer making a break down the touchline before a wonderful backhanded pass created the space for Connor Matthews to touch down under the posts with Dwyer adding the conversion. Wigan were in fine form and looked capable of scoring with every possession. Pat Melling made a great break in the centre and some good backing up and quality handling led to Sammy Makinson finishing well in the corner to round off a devastating 5 minute spell of attacking rugby.
Oswestry rallied and managed to come back at Wigan, tying the game at half time with a converted try and a penalty, to go in at 17 apiece. It was Oswestry who started the brighter, attacking the Wigan line through the forwards and eventually crossing the line. The match continued to ebb and flow and it was Wigan’s turn to add to the score sheet with a move started deep within their own half that was moved skilfully through the backline before being moved inside for Connor Matthews to score again. With the scores tied at 22 apiece, Wigan’s hearts were broken when Oswestry were awarded a penalty well within range with only minutes to spare. The penalty was converted and Wigan once again looked to be on the end of a close defeat. However, panic set into the Oswestry back line, kicking away possession and allowing Wigan to run the ball back. Adam Dwyer once again took up the attack and he chipped over the on rushing defenders for Pat Melling to collect and go over for the match winning try, which was ably converted by Dwyer.
Players and supporters alike were over joyed at the final whistle as Wigan finally got the monkey off their backs and recorded their first win of the season and a bonus point.
