Wigan’s first home game of the new year did not go to plan as a number of injuries and withdrawals saw a patched up side take to the field against Eccles.
Eccles were immediately on the front foot and had sustained pressure in the Wigan half. A series of penalties kept the visitors in charge before a move down the left wing saw Eccles over in the corner.
Eccles tasted blood and were primed to go for the kill. Their rangy winger proving too quick and too elusive to bring down as the visitors ran up 49 unanswered points before the break.
Eccles continued the second half in dominant fashion as they opened the scoring just after kick off for a 54 nil lead.
Under pressure again, Wigan stole the ball and looked to make a break before the ball was given straight back to the visitors, just 10 yards out and was walked over to take the scores to 0-61.
Eccles added another before Wigan, who had showed great heart throughout, began to claw their way back into the game.
An intercept from Mark Critchley was taken 20 yards inside the Eccles half before he adeptly found Will Morgan on the right wing who finished from 30 yards.
Riley Dervan was the next to see a gap and made a great break through the middle of the park before offloading. Luke Sutcliffe skillfully fielded the pass and recovered before finding Tom Seabrook in space who finished from 15 yards. Will Morgan added the conversion and the game ended 12-68.
Wigan will look to regroup this week before travelling to Wilmslow next weekend.
