Training sessions pay dividends as Wigan rout Ormskirk

Wigan welcomed West Lancashire rivals, Ormskirk to Douglas Valley this weekend looking to make it back to back wins to open the league season. Blessed with a break in the wet weather, conditions were conducive to running rugby and Wigan did not disappoint.

However, it was great play from the pack that opened up the ‘Kirk defence for the first score. A break through the middle recycled and supported well by second row, Adam Pierce who took it over under the posts. Chris Carr added the conversion to make it 7-0 after 12 minutes.

Chris Carr added more points to his tally as a well worked move in the back line put him through for his first try of the day.

Ormskirk found some heart and worked themselves into a decent attacking position before Wigan were ‘pinged’ for an indiscretion in the tackle. The away side had a shot at goal and brought the game back to 12-3 after 28 minutes.

But the momentum hadn’t shifted far and Wigan took advantage of possession from the restart and worked into ‘Kirk territory. An attacking Wigan lineout just 10 metres out was played out into the backs and it was Chris Carr once again who was on hand to finish off the move. Carr converted his own try and the score moved to 19-3.

Wigan looked in control and full of confidence and again made good with the ball in hand. Nathan Butler taking the ball at fullback made a break from the halfway line, turning defenders inside and out, before finding Harry Barker in support to take it home from 22 yards. Chris Carr added the conversion to give Wigan a convincing 26-3 lead at the half time break.

The second half didn’t start much better for the visitors as Sam Gee, initially running up a blind alley, checked back on himself and took the ball blind before finding Jacob Rigby who dived over in the corner.

Almost straight from the kickoff, Wigan once again made inroads. This time the break was finished off by Ollie Morgan under the sticks. Carr added the conversion.

The game settled down now as Ormskirk consolidated and Wigan took their foot off the gas. It wasn’t until the 70 minute mark than the scorer was troubled again. This time it was Corey Atkins who made a barnstorming break before the hooker once again found Jacob Rigby in support for his second try of the game.

Ormskirk can take some heart from a strong finish which saw them move down the left flank and score under the posts but the game was well gone by then and the game finished with a resounding 43-10 victory for the Douglas Valley side.

Wigan make the short trip to St John Rigby college, to face Orrell this weekend with kick off scheduled for 3pm.
