Wigan produce 'Total Rugby' in coastal shellacking!

Wigan U9's made the trip across the M55 for their first ever visit to Fylde RUFC. Pulling up at the impressive club house, immaculate pitches and all weather training facilities it could've been overwhelming for the lads to play in such an environment, especially when we saw the size of some of their players!

Scratching round for a team until moments before kick off, the 8 lads who pulled their boots on put in 2 stellar performances, worthy of being televised.

With the sun high in the clear morning sky and a paddock that just took a stood, Fylde started the first game. From the kick off, the energy levels from the Wigan team were immense and their desire to defend from the front was plain to see. Good tackling forced a Fylde error and from the resultant turnover, good support play and straight running allowed George to break clear and cross for the first try.

From the restart, big shots from Brandan and Harris again forced errors and George capitalised again barging his way to the line whilst dragging numerous defenders with him. He had clearly had his 6 Weetabix and protein shake for breakfast.

Further scores followed from Nathan, Brandan and Harris following evasive and determined running, superb support play and Harlem Globetrotter style handling.

In the second stanza Wigan continued to dominate. Fylde had some big strong runners but it was the away teams defence that won the game. The Fylde boys could get any yardage or momentum due to the aggressive tackling forcing the home team on the back foot. Errors were being forced and punished with no remorse. Fylde could not contain the attacking threat that the young Lions posed and 5 further tries followed in the second half from George, Harris and Nathan.

Final Score: Fylde 0 - 10 Wigan

The second game was a much tighter affair. The home team fielded a fresh set of players (and had 8 on players on the pitch at one stage!) whilst Wigan had one sub and the tiredness showed from the start as Fylde raced into a 2-0 lead following some lapses in concentration.

Wigan soon got on the score sheet with some good play down the flanks resulting in tries for Harris and Nathan.

Kian, Francis and Harry were beginning to come into the game more and made territory through the middle but a couple of further Fylde scores made the it 5-3.

Defeat looked on the cards as the home team started to apply more pressure, however a couple of break away tries from Nathan bought the away team back into it. The Wigan lads dug deep and (despite the late nights at the Grand Final the previous evening) manage to snatch the victory.

Final Score: Fylde 6 - 7 Wigan

Team; Nathan, Harris, Francis, Harry, Brandan, Natty, Kian, George

Superb performance all round but the MOM went to George for his cannonball style running through the defence.

Weather: Sunny, dry
Post Match Meal: Cumberland Sausage and Chips 9/10.
