Wigan U8's triumph in hard fought local derby

Well things were looking bleak prior to kick off; a bare squad of 6 players, the midfield marshal Patrick H was AWOL without a sick note together with his Press Officer Dad, there was a biting northerly breeze and worst of all Coach Butler had ‘Man Flu’.
The first game started promisingly enough. The Wigan defence was initially resilient with multiple turnovers as they held the line and tagged Tyldesley into submission. The passing drills at training were also looking to have finally sunk in but they seemed to have lost their ‘go-forward’. There were the inevitable four tries from Nathan, a couple from Patrick and singles from Daniel, George and Levi but they had started slow, trailing at half time and couldn’t pull it back by the time he referee blew for full time.
The pick of the tries was from our new player Patrick who drove through the opposition before side stepping the last defender and diving over for an exceptional individual effort. Props are hard to find but this one will be a belter, solid and strong but with a turn of pace and great hands and footwork.
10-9 was the score and grumpy, snotty Butler was not happy. Words were spoken and best not repeated as the teams took on fluids and words of wisdom before the second match.

Coach Butler rips into the squad between matches.
He’s mean with that Man Flu but it does the trick!

In the second game they managed to remember everything that the coach has drummed into them; the disciplined rush defence, breath taking passing combined with penetrating running. They were running hot and blew the opposition away. For the first time on record every player made the score sheet with Nathan ofcourse running in another four. The pick of the tries was finally touched down by George but only after the ball was moved through several pairs of hands with hardly a tag displaced. Final score 11-9.

Coach Butler was a proud man as he took on his usual brand of post-match fluids to replenish the pints of snot and sweat he had lost during the morning.

Man of the Match: Levi, scoring his first hat trick. Only one try all last season and he has notched up five already this year.

Our special thanks to the opposition Tyldesley RUFC whose coach took the trouble to write and complement Butlers Boys, saying that they had put on the best performance he had seen all season, and their kitchen staff who put on the best snack of the season so far!!

Squad: Daniel, Francis, George, Levi, Nathan, Patrick

Weather: Bright but a raw northerly breeze

Refreshments: Sausage Roll and Chocolate Crispy Cake (most popular of the season so far)
