In the bleak mid winter, frosty winds made us moan.

Player: Patrick, Daniel, Nathan, George, Levi, Jamie, Connor, Francis, Brandan (new haircut), Sam, Tom
Weather: Ridiculously cold - polar bears spotted wearing coats
Pitch conditions: Good to soft

The under 8s entertained their bitter rivals Liverpool St.Helens in a closely fought local derby. A capacity crowd put aside vanity and wrapped up warm against the icy winds (Stuart's hat and Connor's dad's gloves were excellent!). The early exchanges were tight but LSH edged away while the Wigan outfit came to terms with the sub-zero temperatures and the post Christmas malaise that January often brings. With Coach Butler prowling the touch line, like a caged tiger in shorts, barking instructions they quickly pulled themselves together with Brandan (newly streamlined) and Nathan leading the way. Daniel also scored two tries as he demonstrated what a dangerous broken field runner he is.

LSH were proving awkward opposition as Jamie (playing for them) made a couple of excellent breaks. However it was Sam (playing up an age group alongside Tom as their game was cancelled) who kept us in the game. Francis, who had been struggling for fitness in the days leading up to this clash, had to withdraw. This left the way open for the younger boys to inject some dynamism and energy into the game.

George, Patrick and Levi passed the ball well creating gaps for the speed merchants Sam, Connor and Nathan to exploit them. The first game ended in a nail biting 9-9 draw.

The second game was a better all round performance from Wigan. The temperature seemed to rise by a few degrees which allowed them stretch their legs and demonstrate their class. Patrick volunteered to play for the opposition (happy to put another shirt on and keep warm). Sam again showed an ability beyond his years. The speed and balance he showed left LSH clutching at thin air time and time again as he raced over the whitewash four times in the second fixture. Tom too got in on the act scoring a length of the field try reminiscent of Offiah at Wembley.

The defence too was excellent with the highlight being a 50 yard dash and full length dive by Daniel as he denied a breakaway try (Dan landed at the feet of his proud mum, dad and grandad - storybook stuff!). Wigan edged away to win 7-5.

Overall, an excellent performance from the boys. The younger boys were outstanding whilst the established "veterans", despite being ring rusty after the Christmas break, showed that they are a formidable force on their own paddock.

A word also about the merry whistle blower. At last, a referee with the authority and presence that the team deserve. Also a man not afraid to wear a pair of shorts in -30 degree temperatures. Well done sir.

Man of the Match: Sam
