Defeat on the road but a good team performance to build on.

Under 8s - Away at Ormskirk

Players: Nathan, Patrick, Daniel, Levi, Joseph, Francis,George
Weather: Windy and cold
Going: Good to soft

The journey to Ormskirk promised much as a rainbow stood high over the dreaming spires of Edge Hill College. However there was no pot of gold for the under 8s; only a hard fought contest against a well drilled Ormskirk outfit.

The early skirmishes brought a tear of emotion to the eye of Coach Butler as one of his intricate moves (practiced in the rain on Wednesday night) came off to bring the first try for Nathan. Patrick soon followed this up with a try which was reward for excellent support work. However the opening stanza was marked by some poor positional play and wayward tagging. Fortunately the boys rallied quickly and hit back with Patrick racing over the whitewash to complete a first half hat-trick. The defence improved in the second half with George and Levi both working hard to keep Ormskirk at bay. However it was Nathan who came to the fore with some coruscating runs and some dramatic last ditch tagging. As Alex Murphy once said,"there's no excuse for pace!" This defence was matched by Daniel, who, time after time, would save a try with an outstretched fingertip. Awe inspiring stuff.

The second half brought an improved performance from Wigan as Patrick scored again, prompting a hasty renegotiation of his "pound per try" contract. Crowd favourite Francis tired the opposition with his no nonsense direct running whilst Joseph's dancing feet mesmerised the Ormskirk defenders (as well as some of his own players!)

The second game showed an improved focus from the Wigan outfit with notable performances from George and Daniel who both bagged a brace of tries. George in particular caught the eye with his foraging in the loose. An undervalued skill in Tag Rugby. Levi's growing confidence was evident as he found himself in good positions time after time.

Both games ended in narrow defeat for the Boys in Black but Coach Butler commented in his post match interview how he was delighted by the level of heart and passion from his young charges.

Man of the match - Patrick
Post match meal - Hot dog (NB no chips)

The under 7s continued their excellent progress with some excellent performances. Zac scored his customary collection of wonder tries whilst Tom showed electrifying pace. A mention also for James, who scored two excellent tries.

Joint men of the match - George and Thomas.
