Wigan headed down the east Lancs for tough encounter with Sefton

Whilst coach Parker and Joss was down at Twickers the team headed for Sefton, with expectations of a tough encounter. Following an emotional service and minutes silence, impeccably respected by both sets of players, the team was ready for battle. The early exchanges showed that Wigan would have to dig deep against the big and well drilled Sefton pack. Good hands from Oli W, Danny and Tom nearly led to an early score for Mack, who got bundled in to touch on the corner flag. From the resultant line out, Myles out jumped his opposite number fed Jack who dived over in the corner. Will narrowly missed difficult conversion. From the ko a great take from Harry put Rivan on one of his barnstorming runs, popped the ball to Corey who recycled the ball for the slick back line of Tom and Oli, who fed Joe who danced his way through 3 tacklers to score under the sticks. Conversion Will, Wigan 12-0 up. Again from the ko, great take from Harry, who again had Corey in support to provide quick ball for the ever dangerous back line. Great ball retention and the ball through numerous sets of hands, saw Myles in for his second. Conversion missed. Sefton smarting from the early scores, came back to score a try - conversion missed.

The Sefton score was a wake up call to Wigan. With Harry turning over ball and Corey having the best game this season, they were ably supported by Rivan and terrier like George, turning ball over for fun. The result of which was a try for Matthew, converted by Will. Half time score 22-5.

Following a number of changes at half time, Wigan were slow to get back in to their rhythm but always looked dangerous when they through the ball about. From 1 To 20, the team looked comfortable with a ball 'in hand'. With a number of penalties against them, Wigan were pegged back in their 22, Sefton opted to kick to the corner. With the ball appearing to be going dead, coach Morgan told Will to "leave it". As standard Will ignored his dad, caught the ball behind his own line and in true Wigan u13 style decided to 'run it'. Absolute madness!. No panic from Will who tackled 5 yards from his line, ball recycled and Tom fed Matthew who went past 3 would be defenders up the Wigan touchline before stepping inside on the Half way line , drew the full back and put Joe away to score under the sticks. Absolute class, would have graced Twickers, pity coach Parker didn't see it.

You will have to excuse my memory of the rest of the game, the last try being the root cause.

The game finished 43-12, full scoters were Myles 2,Joe 2, Matthew 2, Rivan 2,Corey 1, 4 conversions.

The performance from the lads showed we can mix it against big opposition. Sefton are a well organised side, particularly the pack, but the solid defence nullified their attack. The backs were once again a threat running the ball at will.

MOM Corey, who tackled anything that moved.
