Fantastic sunny weather and the pristine playing surfaces at home combined well giving Wigan their favoured conditions.

With Myles unavailable, we were lucky to welcome back Christian to front-up the Wigan pack. Observing the visitors warming up, I did assume they were the 11’s at first, looking, as do all sides we play, to be significantly heavier than our boys. Well organized too, looking at them running through drills.

Wigan started well though, and it wasn’t long before Joss found a way through and opened the scoring. With the positive start in the bag, and in the warm sunshine, Wigan moved the ball well, using pace on and off the ball to their benefit. Aldwinians seemed unable to muster up any attacking moves, with Harry up quick to tackle and spoiling their efforts. Ely had run, weaving past a few Aldwinians defenders. A break by a strong Aldwinians player looked try-bound, but Joe ran half the pitch to catch him right on the line preventing a try. Unfortunately Aldwinians had more in support than Wigan, and the try came soon after.

Joss made a break but couldn’t quite make the line, and following a scrum which Wigan won, Joss went blind and finished the job. Winnies' reply was to send a big lad down the middle, and Wigan failed to get him low so he scored. Kyle had a run, and made a great pass to William, who despite the ankle problem, burned off any defenders going right through the middle for a try. Not content with the one, William quickly added a second try soon after, zig-zagging up through the whole field.

William played a part in the Wigan defence too, making some key tackles. Jacob and Brad, as usual, also making plenty of tackles. But Aldwinians had numbers in support going forward, and soon got a third try.

Some superb passing from Kyle Jacob and Mack, then to William put William up for his third as we came up for half time

Score at the break 5-3

Aldwinians came back pepped up and for a few minutes Wigan were deep in their own half. Christian and Sam getting well involved in the defences. Ely and Kyle looking for ways to carry the ball up field. Following 3 penalties against Wigan, William made a break up the wing, and no-one got near him. Try number 4 for Will.

Following a great interception by Christian, Joss had a run and made a superb pass to Will, but on this occasion he got caught up in traffic.

Christian did us proud in the line-outs too, and following one win, Harry made a break and crossed the line but was brought back for handing off. Shortly afterwards though Wigan won a penalty and when the ball came Harry’s way he made sure he got the try he deserved.

Some superb tackling by Brad, Kyle and Sam helped keep Winnies at bay, as did some effective ball-ripping by Mack, Harry and Jacob.

Full time: Wigan 7 Aldwinians 4
