Wigan Lions travelled to Warrington for a mini-section fixture.

Rain-softened ground beneath a clear sunny sky, with fairly mild temperatures given the time of year, made playing conditions close to ideal.

Which Wigan would turn up? The confident team that started the season so convincingly with flair, and fluent well-drilled play, or the more recently-seen fragmented collection of individuals shy of tackling, rucking and supporting forward moves? The final score surely gives a clear adjudication. Although Wigan travelled once more with a reduced squad due to unavailability, there was enough experience amongst those present to do the job.

From the off Warrington easily found holes in the Wigan defence; the visitors happy to watch as attacks went by them uncontested. Usual suspects Harry and Kyle did make significant defensive efforts, and whilst others such as Sam contributed, 2 or 3 players cannot defend against 9.

Harry and Kyle also made efforts to drive forward, but support from teammates was non-existent. Warrington’s defensive drive strategy was well-drilled and universally effective against these one-man attacks.

Score at the break 5-0

Early in the second half Kyle restored the visitors’ hope, receiving the ball on the burst, and finishing the job Kyle-style, carrying several defenders along with him, and scoring an impressive solo try.

William joined the tacklers with a try-saver, taking a hit in the process, and soon afterwards another try was saved, this time by Kyle.

Going forward Joe put in a great drive.

Mack made an excellent tackle, and later put in a great forward run.

But these efforts were no match for the home side who throughout were adding points.

Harry, alone, showed great heart, making three tackles on the bounce, and refusing to give in.

Full time: Warrington 14 tries, Wigan 1

Squad:
Christian, Eli, Harry, Joe, Joss, Kyle, Luca, Mack, Nicholas, Sam, Tom, William.

Man of the Match: Kyle

Tries: Kyle 1.

Big thanks to Mrs Roberts for stepping in a short notice to take notes for the report; I had been delayed in the midlands.
