U16s overcome stern test at home

Today the U16s welcome Bowdon RUFC to the Valley on a bright autumn day kick off 11am. Bowdon turned up with a large squad and promised a strong test for the Wigan side.

A new squad member Lewis makes his debut.

First Half

With kick off at 11 a good tight game ensued with both side throwing there best efforts at each other and cancelling each other out in defense.

The home side broke the deadlock on 13 mins after some end to end play, Wigan breaking out of defense and then up to the opposition line, Ethan took great catch from apoor Bowdon clearance kick, the ball was then shipped out backs and kick from Billy was superbly finished by Isaac, Joss adding extras from left edge 7-0

Some good rugby followed and it wasn’t until 29 mins another good move saw Logan over in the right corner. Joss adds extra this time from right touch 14-0

A Very even match, Wigan were well tested by Bowdon and made it to half time 14-0

Second half

A good start to the half after 5 mins Logan forced over over near posts. Joss kick to make it 3 from 3. 21-0

After 8 mins awell worked move sees Billy score in right corner, Joss shows is only human after all and this one slips just wide 26-0.

After 10mins Bowden get one back after some sloppy defending where 2 Wigan players couldn’t fall on a through ball in defense.

Logan scores after 13 minutes going over after delicate kick chase, Joss misses this too 31-5

A good back move after 25 mins saw the ball shipped out to Cameron on the wing and he runs three quarters of pitch to touch down, Joss refines mojo and adds the extras 38-5

Bowdon don’t let their heads go down and after 29mins are rewarded with another response. A good chase at the conversion pressures their kicker to push the attempt wide. 38-10

Bowdon, buoyed by this scored applied some good pressure to the Wigan line and were rewarded with forward try forcing over on last play in the corner. This went unconverted

Final Score 38-15

A good game of rugby all in all, both sides feeling slightly disappointed that they didn’y perform better but this was probably due to the quality of the opposition. Plenty for the home side to work on before the cup match next week.

Squad today: Tim, Sam P, Ethan, Max, Xander, Ben G, Owen C, Tom, Joss, Sam C, Cameron, Logan, Owen F, Isaac, Billy, Kieron F, James, Lewis
