Hard fought cup match victory for the U16

The U16s welcomed Waterloo to the valley for round 2 of the Lancs Cup. Waterloo fresh from a narrow victory last week against Leigh promising to be a tough match for the home team.

Straight from the kick off Waterloo were on the attack and testing the Wigan defence.
However Wigan were able to turn over the ball and after some great passing and backing up Ethan stormed over on right after 2 minutes. A great conversion followed by Joss in tricky breeze 7-0.

There then followed a tight period of play with a lot of to and fro with both teams showing great skills in attack only to be met with equally impressive defences. After 17 mins Sam P limped off injured, Owen moving up to hooker and Kieron in at loose forward.

A period of free flowing but chaotic play followed giving Billy the opportunity of making sense of it and flying over on the far right for a great try on 24 minutes. Joss had his kicking boots on today and superbly converted to take the score to 14-0.

Waterloo were not for lying down and there then followed perhaps their best spell of the game applying massive pressure to the Wigan line, bringing out a try saving tackle pushing there player into touch on the line. Following the lineout and a bit of loose play the backs enabled Billy to bring ball out to just beyond the half and kick on for Logan supporting to follow and score. Joss hits post and out 19-0

HALF TIME 19-0

SECOND HALF

The half time team talk must have worked well for Waterloo as the came out determined again and both teams tested each other again and some great rugby was played for all the spectators to see.
Waterloo were rewarded for their efforts after 10 mins and as they sneaked one up the blind side and round under the posts, duly converted and the deficit now reduced 19-7

Again the match was tight and free flowing but after 16mins Wigan were awarded a penalty that Joss was able to put away and increase the margin to more than 2 scores 22-7

The match remained tight, the forwards now coming more into it and after 27 mins great break by Max saw him cover half the pitch, superbly backed up by Joss who managed to evade the defence to score in the left corner. Alas he just missed converting his own try. 27-7
On the last play of the game Wigan just missed adding another as the ball was kicked safe by the defence over the try line in time for the final whistle

FINAL SCORE 27-7

A good team display today, with plenty of graft and teamwork, Waterloo played really well and forced perhaps too many mistakes and showed us aspects in need of improvement. See you at training Thursday.

Squad today: Tim, Sam P, Ethan, Max, Xander, Ben G, Owen C, Tom, Joss, Sam C, Cameron, Logan, Owen F, Isaac, Billy, Kieron F, James

MOM: Ethan for some great penetrating runs and leading by example
Special Mention: Xander for great all round play
