Wigan progress to the Cup semis

Kick of delayed for an hour meant the frozen pitches had a chance to thaw on this very cold but sunny Sunday morning.

Wigan played down the hill and with the advantage of the breeze in the first half. The start was very close with both teams showing good defence. On 9 minutes Samson made a good break down the right wing and appeared to ground the ball over the line, but the referee couldn't see enough to award a try. However from the resulting scrum Wigan then dispatched Logan on a strong run to score under the posts and Joss converted. 7-0

Bolton responded a couple of minutes later with a well worked try from some good forward work and levelled the score on 12 minutes 7-7

After 16 minutes a missed lineout from Bolton allowed Wigan to send the ball out along the line and Billy broke through to score on the right. The wind taking Joss' effort just wide. 12-7

On 24 minuted Max burst through to score, again unconverted 17-7

The match looked as though the score would remain until half time but a quick ship down the backs saw Billy round the wing and score under the posts, this time Joss adding the extras.

HT 24-7

The second half had Wigan playing against the slope and the elements. Bolton's team talk had reinvigorated the team and they immediately laid siege to the Wigan line. The home team put up a great effort repel them and once holding the ball up over the line, but relented after 5 minutes and Bolton scored and converted to reduce their arrears. 24-14 Game on

On 8 minutes Wigan were awarded a penalty. It looked kickable but the breeze was difficult and Joss again just missed.

Billy went in again in the corner after 10 minutes, Joss just missing again 29-14

Bolton were still making this a good spectacle and making Wigans defence work hard. After 17 minutes Wigan turned defence into attack with Billy and Owen showing great backing up skill with several passes between each other up the right wing and Owen scored under the posts with Joss adding the 2. 36-14

This knocked a bit of the stuffing out of Bolton as Billy returned the kick off to score and take the score to 41-14.

Bolton did regroup though and applied pressure to the Wigan line but again some great defence to attack interplay between Kian and Sam C saw Sam in under the posts and Joss did the necessary 48-14.

One final score came from Toby with a great individual effort to take the final score to 53-14

Well done Lads

Bolton were a strong side and challenged well, especially in the forwards where they seemed to dominate in the lose ball area. While we deserved to win I believe the scoreline flattered Wigan, and there were plenty of signs of area where we need to improve to progress further.

Team: Billy, Isaac, Owen, Logan, Samson, Sam C, Joss, Tim, Sam P, Ethan, Owen, Xander, Tom, Ben G, Max, Luc, James, Ben H, Toby, Kian
