Slow start but strong finish

A trip over to East Manchester today for the visit to Aldwinians, the rain even stopped just before our arrival

Winnies, Lancs Cup champs a couple of seasons ago promised to be tough opposition and Wigan would need to be on their toes.

A minutes silence was held before the match for the death of 14 y.o. Samuel Berkley who was killed on the M67 and went to school locally.

Aldwinians started off well and immediately ran strongly at the Wigan defence making inroads with a useful set of forwards and broke though for a try after only 5 mins. 7-0

Wigan still hadn't woken up and some woeful tackling let them in again after only 8 minutes. 14-0

The team then started to stir and some strong tackles then started to appear, the team then created a good spell of pressure which deservedly was rewarded with a try that Kian got on 12 mins and Joss kicked to reduce the deficit. 7-14

After 20 minutes Wigan levelled the scores with a try that resulted from great support play through the whole team stretching Winnies defense and a great try for Owen F near the left touch line superbly converted by Joss. 14-14

Wigan were awarded a penalty on the half's last play, I was expecting a kick at goal but a quick take from Joss saw the ball out to Isaac who had another excellent day on the wing and touched down. Another great kick from Joss and Wigan went into half time in the lead 14-21

The second half started off with some more pressure from Winnies and some great defending from Wigan. Both sides were evenly matched but after 9 mins some excellent work from from the backs got the ball to Owen F on the wing saw him make some space with a couple of great hand offs and round their wing to score under the posts, Joss did the business 14-28

Winnies fought back and their big forwards bundled over to reduce the deficit on 18 minutes but they failed to convert. 19-28

The Wigan backs now were looking increasingly dangerous and Owen F ended up at the end of another good on 23 minutes to round their defence again and score his hat trick under the posts to allow Joss to add the extras. 19-35

Hard fought ball won by the forwards and good all round support play allowed the purple patch for the backs to continue as Logan went over on 26mins 19-42

Finally a well placed kick infield from Billy allowed Sam P to touch down for the final try which went unconverted (but that's another story)

Final Score 19-47

Good play from Wigan after another slow start. The slow start needs to be addressed before our cup matches in the next 2 weekend.
