Strong performance but outdone by last years Yorkshire Cup winners

Great day for a trip over the hill to Hipperholme just outside Halifax
The visit to last years U14 Yorkshire Cup Winners promised a stern test for the Wigan team

Wigan kicked of uphill and with a light breeze behind. Early encounters were tough and even and neither side fully took the initiative until after 7 minutes Brods squeezed over for the opening score which went unconverted. 5-0

The next phase was evenly matched with both sides testing each others defences and matching each other. This continued for some time until after 20 minutes Brods stretched the Wigan defence too far from side to side and touched down again in the left corner. Their conversion attempt missed bouncing out off the post. 10-0

Brods back line now moved up a gear and and soon after opened up Wigan's defence again this time to score under the post, duly converted 17-0 after 23 minutes.

Wigan rallied and now the forwards took on more of the ball and started to make inroads and Sam P powered for a try converted by Billy to bring the score back to 17-7 at about 30 minutes

This would have been a good score to take into half time but a lapse in concentration allowed Brods in again on the blind side, Their conversion again out off the post.

So Wigan went into half time 22-7 with their work cut out. One of the local supporters said the pitch had a "10 point slope", so there was hope yet for the visitors.

The second half saw Wigan start with much more determination and control, and a fascinating duel continued. Wigan forwards took a lot more play to Brods and made some inroads and the backs had some good attempts at braking down the opposition with all players putting in a good display. It took 13 minutes before Billy managed to score in the left corner unconverted by Logan. 22-12

After 20 minutes Sam P barged over from a penalty award, again unconverted 22-17

Wigan back within a score now and confidence was growing. Unfortunately a missed tackle in a quickly advancing defensive line alowed Brods in under the posts, converted 29-17

Brods backs then showed why they were last years Yorkshire champions with an excellent try as theire stand off kicked one out to the winger who caught at pace and touched down. Their conversion attempt hit the post and out again! 34-17

This knocked the stuffing out of Wigan a bit and Brods backs again cut through the defence again scoring under the posts. The conversion was the last play of the match and Wigan lost 41-17.

Wigan were upset but rightly weren't disheartened. They knew where they failed and look forward to putting that right when we welcome Old Brodleians back to the Valley in a few weeks time. Wigan learned a lot and hopefully more training and match time will tighten the team up for some important matches to come.
