Another Great win for the Wigan Boys!!

Round 3 Blacksticks Blue Lancashire Cup – 6th November 2016

Wigan RUFC v Aldwinians RUFC

Fireworks continue at the Valley

The U14s welcomed Aldwinians for an eagerly anticipated cup fixture. After two previous wins in the last two rounds away to Waterloo and home to Bolton, our lads were keen to continue their run today. Phil would have had little difficulty motivating his team as the opposition were last year’s Cup winners.

A squad of 20 players gave Phil a Wigan started well, hustling Winnies when they were in possession and thwarting their attack before it had a chance to get going, forcing errors and turning the ball over frequently. In attck Wigan were sleek showing good hands in the forward and the backs. The first try wasn’t long coming and finished off really well by Toby. The conversion by Joss put Wigan 7 points to the good.

Wigan continued in the same style, the forwards setting a good platform for the backs to move the ball well through the hands and soon Logan ended another good move with a second try to take us to 12-0. The scrum was on good form as usual with Sam P regularly winning clean ball, Joss and Sam C kept Winnies half backs on their toes with some searching runs to committing them before swinging the ball out the backs soon to find Logan who ran in the third try. The opposition weren’t used to this and seemed a little shell shocked with the Wigan fireworks.

The display continued, strong and quick in defence and asking questions in attack it wasn’t long before another flowing team move ended in the hands of Billy who showed a clean pair of heels to round the defence to score on the right.
17-0 at half time and a good solid start for the home side. Aldwinians half time team talk seemed to have had some affect as they came back into the game. Slowly with a lot of hard work in defence allowed little time for the opposition to get their moves going, and forcing them into errors. After about 10 minutes the reward for the hard work came with another excellent try for man of the match Toby to take the score to 22-0.

Aldwinians never gave up and were themselves rewarded with a try from a returned kick from Wigan. A well scored try against a scrambling defence brought the game back into contention at 22-5. This seemed only to bolster Wigan’s determination, and they son returned to the other end with another fine move finished off with a determined run and finish by Tom S. Wigan then capped off a fine match with another move which resulted in a second try for Logan.

A final score of 32-5 was a great result against a good team. The team were justifiably proud of their efforts. All the 20 players played their part and were not found wanting, sorry I’ve not mentioned them all here, they all deserve it!!

3 from 3, Warrington, Grasshoppers and Sefton to come but on this form this team will provide a good match for most teams.
Great Result - Well done boys!
