Special mention to Adam who volunteered to play for Ashton because they were short (2nd time this Adam )
This was the first home game of the season after the disappointment of the Manchester festival and the huge crowd that turned up weren’t disappointed with some fantastic rugby played.
The Coaches eventually agreed to play four ten minute games after Phil’s opening offer of four thirty minute games was somehow refused
First Game Wigan 3 Ashton 1
The first game went to Wigan winning three tries to one, with James Moran opening the score with his first of what would be a hatrick of tries today. Ashton quickly replied back to level the score, but a fantastic try by Sam Leonard in the corner took Wigan back into the lead. But the pick of the tries was the last one from Ethan Hulme made superbly by Reece with an offload to allow Ethan to power over in the corner for the final try.
Second Game Wigan 3 Ashton 1
The 2nd game and Ashton scored immediately from the kick off with their speedy winger running from his own half to cross the line. After a couple of hard drives down the middle Wigan had Ashton pinned on their line and a great run into their defensive line saw Charley equal the scores by twisting and turning to score a try. Wigan doubled their efforts with another try from Ethan again crashing over the line after some great team work again to get him into that position. Sam Carelton got the third try of this game with a fantastic solo effort after some great tackling in the middle of the park from Isaac, Joe and Will.
Third Game Wigan 1 Ashton 0
The 3rd game proved a much closer and tougher game with only one try scored by James taking his tally to two. A couple of injuries for both teams and head high tackle’s as the players started to tire a little. Some great Rugby Union played with passes been thrown out wide and stretching the Ashtons defensive line was very pleasing to see. Some good solid running with the ball from Jack and Man of the Match Isaac matched with some tough tackling from Joe, Charley, Reece & Will.
Fourth Game Wigan 1 Ashton 2
The 4th game was very close and Wigan looked a little tired at the end after winning the first three games. Ashton got the first try and James completed his hat trick to get Wigan level and this is how it stayed until the last minute when a draw looked inevitable, but Ashton scored almost on the final whistle to clinch it.
All in all a great start to the season today by the boys making all parents and coaches vey proud and they did their club proud. Well Done !
