Wigan’s U9’s hosted local side Liverpool St Helens on a cold winter’s morning at Douglas Valley. Despite the weather, the spectators were treated to a fine defensive display coupled with a ruthless attacking performance as Wigan’s young guns showed off their skills.
With LSH only having one substitute to Wigan’s 7, the game was always going to be a challenge to the team from over ‘th’ill’. Despite the challenge the LSH players showed grit and determination to attack when given the chance. Unfortunately the opportunities were very limited as Wigan continued to push forward, forcing handovers deep in the opposition half.
Wigan’s players started to use the ball and create space, with every opportunity to attack taken gleefully. With their usual structured backline, the ball was moved across the pitch with pin point accuracy resulting in some fantastic tries.
As the game became somewhat one sided, partly due to the difference in squad numbers as tired legs took hold, it was agreed that some of the Wigan players would don an LSH shirt and take advantage of the opportunity to challenge their teammates. Needless to say the chance wasn’t wasted as the first set of Wigan players traded tackles, offering strong resistance in midfield.
With the game drawing to a close, and having rotated several Wigan players, the LHS players never give up and tried to push forward, challenging Wigan. Wigan however stood strong, having allowed LSH little breathing space all morning they continued to dominate till the final whistle taking both games.
Back in the clubhouse, votes were collected and compiled for Parent’s Player and Coach’s Player. With the Parent’s votes counted, George stood out in the votes and on the pitch. Having played his usual central role, very little had passed his side all game with his dominant tackling again proving effective.
The Coach’s award was a difficult decision. With choices aplenty, both coaches debated reason for each player. Having recently found fine form, Tom D had shone. With his confidence high, he played a pivotal role in attack with some delightful darting runs earning him the award for a fine performance.
