Wigan U9's visited local rivals Orrell to kick off the 2015/16 season in style. Fielding a promising 10 players - 7 of which taking to the field for their first experience of contact rugby - adorned in new pads, headguards and gumshields, the players gathered for a last minute run through of the rules and tackling technique.
Waiting on the sidelines as the whistle blew, the eager parents and expectant coaches (with fingers crossed) witnessed the players take to full contact with a clear determination to start the season on a winning note.
Despite some spirited individual performances from the opposition, the players maintained their composure to take a strong lead which they didn't relinquish, running out eventual winners 10-6.
A fantastic start to the season, especially given the nature of the game with every player contributing to the result. Special mention has to go to Harry, for his continued strong running throughout the game and narrowly missing out on the MOM award. The award went to Kieron, for his faultless display in defence - tackling everything that moved - earning him the MOM award.
