A season undefeated!

In what was the last game of the season, Wigan’s U8’s made the short journey over the border to Orrell, knowing that a win would see them maintain their undefeated status for a second consecutive season. With a last minute change of venue from Up Holland High to St John Rigby College, the team arrived ready for action. With the team gathered in the changing room, the atmosphere was one of excitement. As the crowd waiting patiently outside, the players participated in their usual changing room warm up routine for the last time this season. The cries of ‘Wigan, Wigan, Wigan’ rang out loud and proud.

Assembled on the pitch, the pre-game drills went as planned and the players lined up to face their final opponents. The weather was dry and the ground was good, so there was no excuse for Wigan not to showcase their usual skill and speed. Missing a few of the regular players, this wasn’t expected to be an easy game. Having trained during the week, Jacob J (playing on dual registration from Aspull RL) donned the black and white hooped jersey for his first game and didn’t disappoint, with deft hands and quick pace he soon made inroads in the waiting Orrell defence. Supported in his attack by Thomas D, who as ever weaved across the pitch in his elusive manner to evade the defenders and show great skill to slice open the defence.

Wigan took advantage of the good conditions and moved the ball with the accuracy which has served them well all campaign. Orrell worked well and despite a slower start soon posted some great tries which ensured the game would not be a one way encounter. However not to be outdone, Tom C attacked the line with true determination, rounding the defenders as he continually broke the line, Rhys ever present in central defence, secured several handovers with his tenacious approach to ensure Wigan maintained a strong grip on the game to take the first win.

Having secured the first win the players gathered for the final push. From the outset the players worked the pass the created space with several early tires. Luke’s fine footwork and vision continued to impress the spectators as Wigan pushed for their final victory. Dominic’s pace and deft running creating space for Wigan to take advantage wherever possible, resulting in some well worked team tries. A sight many of the spectators have come accustomed to. The result was a second win and a season unbeaten!

Back in the college canteen, the players gathered for the final MOM of the season. Having played his part in both games and throughout the season, Zack had impressed with his direct running and shear pace to take home the final MOM.

With the season over for another year, thanks go to all the parents and supporters who have supported and watched - sometimes in the dreariest of conditions - the players play what has to be described as fantastic rugby at such a young age.

Have a good break and see you all next season!!
