Wigan U8's continue on winning way despite the rain

Wigan U8’s travelled to the other side of the borough, through wind and rain to reach the open plains of Tyldesley. Turning up at the club and after putting the clock forward and losing an hour in bed, it appeared that somebody had forgotten to inform this side of Wigan, as only the kitchen staff were on hand to provide a warm cup of coffee. With the time approaching 10.30 and the rain intensifying and with Wigan players aplenty, the coach and parents waited anxiously for the home team.
As kick off approached the local players eventually started to roll up, to the relief of the Wigan team. Having warmed up in the changing rooms so to avoid getting soaked before kickoff, the players made their way across Tyldesley’s first team pitch, through the mud, around the puddles and under the railings. A simply task you would expect. Needless to say, the prospect of running through puddles and trying to drench your teammates was too much a temptation!
As the rain continued the players eventually took to the pitch in weather more fitting for ducks. Despite the conditions, Wigan’s now wet players, started with their usual pace and determination, quickly attacking the opposition’s line and coming away with early scores. Central to the attack was Tom D, with light feet gliding across the water, his darting runs put Wigan on the front foot. Zack showing his usual pace, rounded defenders on the wings to cross several times and with Tom C showing fine form in attack and defence, Wigan maintained a strong control of the game. Tydlesley, never to be outdone, produced some great tries in response and ensure the game never got too far away from them. Taking the first game and with the rain still falling, the players decided on a shortened game for the second match.
Starting were they left off, Wigan quickly posted points on the board through some fantastic direct running from Dominic and maintained their defence with great tagging from Jacob. George again stood strong in defence and attack to ensure Wigan took the spoils as the sun eventually started to shine through the dark clouds. With the players wet and mudded but happy, the game finished and Wigan’s players returned to the clubhouse.
Back in the warmth and after sausage roll and chocolate rice crispy cakes, the players gathered to hear this week’s MOM announcement. Having been instrumental in sorting the defensive line and ordering the attacking line through clear communication, Rhys having ensured the team maintained form and order throughout the morning – obviously listening in training! – took the accolade.
