Wigan's Stars Dazzle on a Winter's Day

With the cold winter weather still gripping the nation, Wigan’s starlets strode out onto the Douglas Valley turf eager to replicate last week’s performance with another win. Faced with a select 10 from Fylde (given they have a 45 strong squad!), Wigan’s players sensed that their unbeaten run maybe put to the test.

With a last minute team talk, huddled in a group to shield from the bitter wind like penguins, the players gathered their thoughts and focused on the task in hand. Buoyed by the return of Grace, who has been struggling with injury, the players lined up in what was billed as a true measure of ability.

As the whistle blew, the game started with a ferocity and speed to ravel any of the upcoming internationals. Wigan’s galvanised group ensured early pressure on the visitors through some fantastic, direct running from Harry as he created inroads through mid-field, backed up by the ever present Zack to cross the line with his usual pace. Grace, clearly still suffering with her injury, fought hard in defence but unfortunately had to call time on her comeback. In spite of this setback the early lead was never relinquished, despite some great attacking from Fylde’s experienced squad and Wigan took the spoils in the first through some fantastic running by Thomas D with his usual fast feet.

As the second game got underway, with the wind increasing and the cold starting to bite, both teams missed tagged which would usually have been a given, resulting in a trade-off of tries. Regardless of the cold (and with the introduction of Harry’s Dad’s coat on the sideline!) the Wigan stars raised their game up a level. With his usual strength (albeit at times a little too strong) and steadfast defence, George showed true determination to ensure Fylde’s attacks were muted. Central to defence was also Rhys, who eagerly chased tags with a stealth like attitude. Added with Tom’s distinctive long distance tries and Dominic electric pace, Wigan pushed on to make it two from two.

Back in the clubhouse and the warmth to both the delight of player and parent, the group gathered to await the announcement of this week’s Man of the Match. Given the collective determination and ability on show from all players, the decision was not easy! Each player deserved to walk away with the award but only one did. Above all, and on a very cold day, Luke stood strong both in defence and attack with great effect, deservedly taking the award in what was only his second game (having recently been recruited) for the club.

Well done everyone!!
