First home fixture of 2015 for Wigan U8's as they take on Tarleton.

Having braced the freezing temperatures in Rossendale last week, Wigan’s U8’s were welcomed by the milder climate of Douglas Valley in their first home game of 2015. With the benefit of having trained midweek at the Youth Zone, despite the weather, the cohesion between the players was clearly visible. From the first whistle, this growing bond between the players proved to be effective in creating space and allowing some fantastic tries to be scored. With his usual pace Zack ran strong, darting in and out to avoid the opposition, Rhys’s elusive footwork left many of the Tarleton defenders guessing and with Harry’s direct running and sheer strength, the game, at time seemed a little one sided. Tartleton’s players tried to find gaps in the Wigan defence, but the determination shown by all the players restricted many of the opposition’s attempts.

With training focused on teamwork and communication, it was obvious they had actually been listening. This was clear to see when rotating substitutes - when the players themselves put their hands up when it was their turn to take a break. This heightened level of communication also proved decisive in defence and attack. Tom C continued to control the defensive line and with some sublime passing, he made use of the space on the pitch to maintain Wigan’s attack, clearly shown as Thomas D’s stealth like approach resulted in some wonderful tries. Jacob’s direct running kept the visitors on the back foot and with Dominic’s athletic running, which at times seems effortless, maintained Wigan’s hold of the game.

With a resounding win in the first match, Wigan’s continued control of the game proved too much in the second, despite some fantastic tries from Tarleton’s determined players which ensured a closer encounter.

Throughout the morning the focus on teamwork was the aim, and they didn’t disappoint. Leading the way, as usual, was George, whose continued support in attack and control in defence proved to be the worthy winner of the MOM award.

All round another fantastic performance by the U8’s bringing a big smile to the face of the Coach and the many faithful supporters!
