U9s’ Toughest Test Of The Season v Macclesfield

Macclesfield and West Park St Helens were the welcomed visitors on Sunday, with Macclesfield bringing along three teams to play against Wigan’s two and West Park’s one. And, it soon became apparent that the six matches played against Macclesfield would be the toughest of the season so far – with the Macc coaches saying the same about Wigan.

Throughout all the matches, Kian, Benito and Tom ran well with the ball, always gaining ground despite the strong Macclesfield tackling, and Sonny, Max, Will, and Finlay used their pace and strength to break through the opposition’s line, and impress with some long range tries.

In defence, Oliver, Jonah, Henry and Wilson tackled well, often covering across to bundle Macc players into touch, whilst Jack, Sam and Alex worked tirelessly from the scrumhalf position, making sure the ball was recycled to continue the attacking momentum.

In such a tough game, where everyone needed to put in so much effort, it was difficult to pick out individual performances, but Lukus and Harry did catch the eye as Lukus The Eel seemed to have been coated in butter as he constantly ran into cul-de-sacs of players, but still somehow managed to emerge with the ball at the other side, and Harry twice sat down on the side-lines, with it looking like his rugby for the day was finished, only then to charge back onto the pitch and knock an opposing players or two halfway to Haigh Hall.

The most notable outcome of Sunday however, was an event that rivals the Camp David Peace Accord and which will probably be honoured in years to come with poems, songs, and a statue.

In the one of the final matches, astonished onlookers stopped in their tracks at the sight of a combined Wigan & St Helens team, on the pitch together – with their ingrained differences cast aside, and playing side by side in perfect harmony.

As one of the young St Helens players remarked post match:

‘I’m half Wiganer anyway, because I really really love pies’.

A return match at Macclesfield is currently in the planning…..
