Max is top try scorer as U9s impress again

Nick & Mark’s Team:
It was an early kick-off on Sunday for the U9s against LSH and Altrincham Kersal, and despite a decidedly grotty looking start to the morning, the weather cleared and a great few hours of entertaining rugby was had yet again.

On ‘Team 1’, it was a similar story to previous weeks, with Wigan scoring a vast majority of the tries in all three of the matches they took part in, whilst also managing to keep their opponents out with some very strong defence.

Archie and Lukus ran with the ball really well as usual, albeit in differing styles, and both scored some very well-taken tries.

Wilson, Noah, Harry H and Henry were strong in the tackle - as expected, and all also contributed to the eight or nine tries scored by the team per game.

And the rapidly improving Sam worked extremely hard, supporting his teammates by taking up the role of scrumhalf more often than not, and distributing the ball well.

Henry was awarded Man of The Match for a very strong all-round performance.

Phil & Bob’s Team:
Sonny captained Team 2 to three consecutive victories, all of which were built around great line speed that forced the opposition into errors under pressure.

Sonny again controlled the game as pivot and was supported by accurate passing from Jack and Alex at halfback.

Will and Toby led the defence once again and Kian and George looked very effective running with the ball.

Despite some determined running from several opposition players, they made little impact against the black and white wall.

Long range tries from Will, George and Sonny were very impressive however it was Toby who stood out with his all-round game to take Man of The Match.

3 wins from 3.

Wayne & Jonny’s Team:
In all three games for ‘Team 3’, the Wigan players were very impressive in both their tackling and running with the ball, and Max pretty much scored each time he touched the ball.

But it wasn’t just Max; the team between them scored (as we say in Wigan) a pon-full, with each player getting at least one.

Tom had a really good game again, and his try was probably the pick of the day - a weaving, dodging cracker from three quarters of the length of the pitch, although a couple of Finlay’s long-range tries ran it close as he scampered over the dewy grass – reminiscent of a rabbit in a headguard being chased by half a dozen stripy-shirted hounds.

Benito was Mr Reliable as ever, eager to make ground with the ball, slipping out a few timely offloads en route, and was always happy to help out in defence, whilst Oliver tackled everything that came near him and quite a few that didn't come near him.

Harry B scored some nice Route One tries and had a superb game – especially in the final game after his Lazarus moment where he suddenly forgot about his career ending arm/rib/leg injury and sprung back to his feet when referee Wayne told him to go and stand with his dad, have a drink and a rest. Praise be to Wayne.

Man of The Match however, had to go to Max. He never missed a tackle and we’re not sure how many tries he scored as we stopped counting at fifteen. We’ll just describe it as a ‘fair few’ and leave it at that.

After the game we received an email from the Altrincham coach saying how impressed he was with our players – who were ‘very powerful and skillful’.

And a touching moment was when Martin Rigby reunited Nick with his long lost folder. A tender moment indeed.

Please Note: there were no tackling or passing stats this week as we’d run out of pens, clipboards, the will and the volunteers to record them….

Awards:
Man of The Match (Team 1) - Henry
Man of The Match (Team 2) - Toby
Man of The Match (Team 3) - Max
