Tough game for the U9s at Ashton On Mersey

Nick & Jonny’s Team
Wigan U9s visited Ashton on Mersey this week, and it did not look promising that the matches would go ahead due to some Saturday night rain of biblical proportions.

But the 08.30 pitch inspection did declareth the pitches playable, and as the Under 9s came out of the changing rooms two-by-two - obviously lead by Noah - and arced their way round to their pitch, the clouds broke, and the sun did shineth.

As it happens, it turned out to be a pleasant morning of rugby, with Wigan coming out as eventual narrow winners - which bears Testament to some of the characters in the team.

Archie and Kian parted wave after wave of Ashton players on five occasions each to score, and Harry B made some good strong direct runs before his Exodus in the final game.

Despite a shaky start – where not a single tackle was made for forty days and forty nights (5 minutes), Wigan soon started to defend in Numbers, lead by Wilson (top tackler, and five tries), Oliver (top scorer with six tries) and Toby - who also scored five tries and who is proving to be a Revelation since his return to the club.

Jack did a good Job of always being in the right place to pass from the breakdown, whilst Alex must have had glue on the Psalms of his hands, as he supported his team mates well, and clung onto three passes to score a hattrick.

In the end, it was a really good performance, and long it may it continue – now and forever

Amen

Phil & Wayne’s Team
It was certainly a game of two halves at Banky Lane, Ashton on Mersey.

The boys got off to a slow, sluggish start and were off the pace in defence compared to the high standards set so far this season. The home side were complemented with the loan of workhorse Noah and then Will, who proceeded to deliver 9 tackles for Ashton against his own team! Unhelpful Will ! Will went on to deliver 17 tackles in game one and his work rate was highly impressive.

The home side star Tom ripped through Wigan in several occasions and landed 5 tries as Wigan backed off. Unusually there was a reluctance by Wigan to get their shoulders in. Max responded with a hat-trick of strong runs and another one that got away after being judged to have knocked on over the try line. George 2, and the busy Jonah 1 added further tries. With seconds left Ashton’s Tom scored again and we lost 7-6 as the whistle blew.

Game 2 saw a big improvement by Wigan although again home star Nathan appeared to be playing us on his own with 5 tries. The tackling improved a notch and Jonah was superb, leading the boys with great bravery. Jonah picked out the Ashton star player with some big tackles and it was this effort that made sure of the Wigan victory. His performance earned Jonah man of the match. Will and Henry also kept the home side at bay with great defence and Max was proving unstoppable with ball in hand, scoring yet another hat trick. Will was in great form with the ball also, helping himself to a hat trick of his own as Ashton backed off him. Further tries from Henry, George and Jonah, and some good work from (our own) Tom and Sam saw us take control with 9 tries to Ashton’s 7, therefore winning the overall cumulative score battle by 1 try.

So, well played Ashton who gave Wigan more trouble than virtually any other team this season but we had enough in the locker to win again.
