Phil’s Team
Wigan under 9s made the trip to Stelfox Avenue Timperley to take on Altrincham Kersal. The Wigan boys were under self-imposed pressure to repeat the Ormskirk performance and started with a little hesitancy, as the early period saw each team test the other out and Wigan looked a little off the pace defensively. However, after words of advice from the coaches, confidence grew and the boys in black and white soon took control.
Lukus James led the attack lines with some mesmerising running that frankly must have confused everyone including himself.
Henry Hurst is rapidly becoming a leader in the team, and his super human efforts delivered 21 tackles. Unfortunately, his bravery resulted in a head clash that required a caitionary hospital check – but thankfully there was no lasting injury. Henry also bagged a hattrick of tries with his direct no nonsense attack style that left the home defence in tatters.
Lukus and new boy Jacob also crossed for 3 tries each with sensational finishing.
Alex and George were the other try scorers with 2 tries apiece.
Noah’s s all-round ability is looking very good after game 3, with 9 tackles, along with Will who made some solid collisions in midfield and produced the offload of the day with 3 defenders hanging off him for Alex to collect and dash over.
George is making a name for himself too due to his amazing last-ditch tackles and maybe there’s already sign of a future full back?
And Benito is becoming a very polished player and his 13 tackles demonstrates his great work rate.
The Wigan line speed grew as the match went on, and by the end, it was clear that Altrincham were finding the going really tough.
All in all, a brave effort by the home side but is was the Douglas Valley boys who took the spoils 13 tries to 6 – continuing a superb start to the season.
Nick’s Team
On a fresh last Sunday of September, Wigan U9s ventured to Timperley to make yet another positive account of themselves.
It’s so encouraging to see these boys develop their rugby, and their bravery in the tackle really underlined a top performance.
Another notable difference this week was that the lads turned far less ball over today staying away from the touch lines and running directly, often breaching Altrincham’s try line!!
Archie' s bullocking runs rewarded him with 2 tries in the first game, and Sam is always ready and willing to run with ball in hand and is learning to off-load effectively.
Oliver was a real asset to the team, both with his 20 tackles and a stunning 7 tries. He powered over from close range but also ran some in from distance.
Finlay continued to snipe and put in a strong performance with the ball in hand, but also in defence with 14 tackles.
Wilson scored a couple of impressive solo jinking tries but also supported his team mates superbly with timely passes, and managed an imposing 16 tackles, whilst Harry made good use of his size and strength kept tight hold of the ball in contact, and also managed to score his first try of the season. He is a difficult player to stop - as the opposition quickly found out!
Tom impressed with an excellent 13 tackles to his name, underlining his speed, positional play and commitment.
Well done lads one and all! Bring on Wednesday and training.
