Wigan and Leigh resumed their long-held rivalry as the Leythars travelled to Douglas Valley for their ADM Leisurewear Division 2 match.
In cold but dry conditions, Wigan had the early pressure. A penalty just 5 yards out was taken in short before George Lowe passed the ball out to Daniel Cassidy. Cassidy looked out wide and put Will Morgan through in the corner for the opening score.
It wasn’t long before Morgan and Cassidy linked up again. A cross-field kick by Cassidy in the Leigh 22 wasn’t fielded by the scrambling defence and Morgan was on hand to tidy up and dive over in the corner for a 10 nil.
Wigan were now camped in the Leigh 22 for long periods but Leigh’s defence was holding firm. It took the dancing feet of Daniel Cassidy to break the deadlock, and he skipped through the middle to score close to the sticks. Cassidy added a conversion for a 17-0 lead.
Cassidy was the creator and the scorer once more before half time. Taking the ball on short he turned inside his man and broke through for the score. Cassidy converted for a 24-0 lead at halftime.
Leigh restarted with a plan to disrupt the Wigan momentum and home side’s frustration soon boiled over. A series of penalties took Leigh within striking distance, and they forced the ball over for what would be their solitary score on the day.
Wigan were still struggling for rhythm when, with 10 minutes remaining, Nathan Butler turned on the pace to break the Leigh line and go over for the score.
Wigan added the final score of the game when a combination of Adam Pierce and Ollie Turvey fly hacked the ball through. Leigh failed to deal with the loose ball and Daniel Cassidy was quickest there and dived on for the score. Cassidy added the conversion, and the game finished 36-7 in the home side’s favour. Wigan remain top of the league and look forward to a rearranged fixture against Sefton, at Douglas Valley this coming Saturday, 25th January at 2.15pm.
