A firework display for the under 14’s
Wigan Under 14’s hosted Old Bedians from Manchester on a boggy but a very good rugby pitch and it only took four minutes to get Wigan of to a flying start when Ryan Wood split the bedians defence in half and skipped through two tackles to score the first try for Wigan, Toby-lee stepped up to take the difficult conversion as it proved as the ball bounced off the post a very unlucky kicked that deserved a better result,
It wasn’t long before the second try for Wigan was rocked in as the fast passing and great team communication helped Ryan Whittle score under the sticks making it an easy kick for Toby-lee to grab the extras, At the halfway point in the first half Wigan’s defending was excellent and the teamwork was good watching on the sidelines tackles being clapped as Wigan raced away for another try and grabbing his second of the day was Ryan wood unfortunately leaving Toby again with a difficult kick which was just wide of the post,
Old Bedians for the first time rocked the Wigan defence to score there first try of the day, a try that I thought should of been chalked off as Wigan defence stood still to a raised flag claiming a high tackle on the Bedians forward then the flag dropped – that’s why they say play to the whistle the Bedians had a difficult kick facing him and just made the extras,
Straight from the restart Bedians received a penalty and the kick went under the sticks the score at this point 17-7 in Wigan’s favour, Wigan regained possession from the kick off and a great run by Kyle A raced towards the try line but was tackled just short with a great ruck the ball came out in the Wigan hands and fast passing set up a try for Wigan and a hat trick for Ryan Wood giving Toby-Lee an easy kick in front of the sticks as the ball went over for the extras the Referee blow for half time score 24-7 Wigan.
Wigan was sent out for the second half but got off to a slow start losing possession and gifting Bedians a easy try which meant an easy conversions putting the score 24-14, Again Wigan not making tackles count gave Bedians a penalty at goal for infringement and Bedians took advantage of this putting the score 24-17, Wigan regained possession from the kick off with a great tackle and great follow up from team mates made Bedians knock on and straight from the scrum and a deep Wigan line Something Adrian and Jon have been trying to work on in training came a great team try James Moran crossing the line and another conversion scored by Toby-lee.
The impressive Ryan Wood scoring his 4th try of the day which started on the Wigan try line as Kyle skipped through a couple of tackles to pass the ball out to the wide where Eddie charged for the try line being held by a few Bedians defenders once they got him to his knees he slipped the ball out and the ball passed down the line on to the running Ryan but leaving a difficult kick for Toby who’s kicking was impressive today but couldn’t find the angle to add the extras score 36-17 for Wigan.
A fatigued Bedians side was now struggling to match Wigans determination and Jon bought on a few substitutes and fresh legs to try and hit Bedians and straight away the substitutes made an impact another great team effort and fast passing sent the ball down the deep Wigan line and the end Product finished off by the on running Jonah to cross the line unfortunately no extras was added 41-17 unfortunately for Wigan Kyle A was sinned binned for a dangerous tackle,
Bedians got some energy back and hit Wigan on the counter attack for a consolation try straight from the kick off Bedians regained possession with a small kick to the right hand side picked up with hardly any challange leaving a difficult kick for the Bedians kicker which he couldn’t convert and the score 41-22 with only a few minutes left to play.
With the minutes now limited Wigan wasn’t finished and neither was Ryan Wood an impressive display by the youngster grabbed his fifth try of the day and fully deserved for the impressive Wigan side as Toby-lee happily stepped aside for Eddie to grab a couple of points for himself as the referee who i would like to mention had a very good game and kept both teams under control the final score 48-22,
