Widnes 39 - 0 Wigan

Wigan made the short trip to Widnes to renew old rivalries and rekindle old friendships. Whilst cold, playing conditions were perfect but it was Widnes that took advantage with a solid and expansive game that gave the Wigan defence trouble throughout.

Widnes opened the scoring just a minute into the game when a Wigan infringement led to a penalty in front of the sticks. The game continued to flow away from Wigan when, just minutes later, Widnes stole a Wigan lineout before shifting the ball out wide for the opening try.

Things got worse for the travelling contingent when a loose clearance kick was poorly followed up and the Widnes back line managed to run the ball back for another try to leave the scores at 15-0 after just 8 minutes.

Widnes were looking clinical and capitalised on more sloppy play from the Douglas Valley outfit. Finding themselves in good position on halfway, Wigan spilled the ball and Widnes were the first to get to it. A couple of passes and the home side were away for another try. 22-0 after just 15 minutes.

Wigan regrouped and made life much harder for the home side, but they were unable to trouble the scorers. Widnes added a further 17 points but based on the opening salvos, Wigan can be proud that they didn’t allow the home side to run up a cricket score. 39-0

Wigan can look for quick revenge as they welcome Widnes to Douglas Valley in the next round of the ADM Premier Cup competition, with kick off scheduled for 2.15pm this Saturday 27th November.
