Wigan see off late scare to take away win

Wigan travelled to East Manchester on Saturday to face Aldwinians, with last week’s narrow defeat to Trafford still fresh in their minds.

Wigan started well and the opening score came just 7 minutes in as Wigan worked their way in the opposition 22 and then some excellent hands in the backline saw the ball shipped out to the left wing for Will Boardman to finish in the corner. Ethan Juke added the conversion.

Wigan added to their tally around the 20 minute mark as Aldwinians attempted escape their own 22. With the ball played back to the stand-off to be cleared, the unfortunate man fumbled the ball and Kilian Wallace was on hand to collect the loose ball and take it in for the try virtually unopposed.

Aldwinians struck back before the half as they attempted to make amends. Having defended diligently the Wigan defence got sucked in by the repeated attacks and Aldwinians took advantage to cross over out wide. Half time score 7-12

After the half, the game settled into a stalemate until 20 minutes in when Wigan were adjudged to have made a tackle off the ball. Aldwinians slotted home the penalty to take the score to 10-12. Wigan struck back through Adam Dwyer with a penalty of their own, before an incident in the ruck threatened to destabilise an entertaining game. 10-15.

With Wigan in control of the ruck, the Aldwinians number 7 launched himself shoulder first into the head of a prone Wigan player and a melee ensued. With the referee unsighted of the initial infringement, the Wigan player was sent off for striking an opponent.

Despite being a man down, Wigan rallied and were able to add another penalty to take the score to 10-18.

With just minutes to go until the final whistle, Aldwinians finally made the extra numbers pay. A break through the middle left the Wigan fullback facing a 2 on 1 and they crossed over to score a converted try. With the score at 17-18 there was some nervousness that a repeated of the previous weeks’ loss was on the cards.

At the death, Wigan nerves were calmed as they were awarded a penalty within kicking range and Adam Dwyer added the three points to give Wigan the 17-21 victory.

Wigan travel to Fleetwood in the ADM Premier Cup competition next Saturday with kickoff scheduled for 3pm.
