Wigan defeated with final play

Wigan welcomed Trafford MV to Douglas Valley in a game that both sides would have been targeting for a win.

A close affair ensued and it was Connor Matthews who broke the deadlock 22 minutes in. With Wigan deep in Trafford territory the ball was played left along the line until it reached Jack Proffitt on the wing. Proffitt cut inside before putting Matthews through on the burst to go over under the posts. Ethan Jukes added the conversion.

Wigan had momentum and from the kick off worked their way into Trafford territory once again. John Foster took the ball on before offloading to Joss Parker. Parker made a half break before putting Max Livesey through the gap to run the ball in from 20 yards out. 12-0

With moments to go in the first half Trafford found themselves camped on the Wigan line. Wigan were adjudged to have slowed the play deliberately and had a man sent to the sin-bin. Trafford kicked the penalty to take the score to 12-3 at half time.

10 minutes into the second half and Wigan fell foul of the law once again as a late tackle was penalised and Trafford converted. 12-6

The momentum swung back Wigan’s way on the 26th minute when Adam Dwyer came onto a crash ball off the back of the scrum and took the ball over. 17-6.

Just two minutes later and Wigan infringed once again. A tackle was deemed to be both high and dangerous and Wigan were once again down to 14 men as Connor Matthews was sent to the sin bin. The resulting penalty caught Wigan napping as a quick tap was taken and played out wide and taken over the line for the try. 17-11

With the game in its final throes, Trafford won a series on penalties and maintained good territory in the Wigan half. With the last play of the game, Trafford went over and scored a converted try to take the victory 17-18.

Wigan can take some consolation from a losing bonus point but will certainly feel that it was 3 points lost.

Wigan’s next game is away to Aldwinians on Saturday 12th October at 3pm.
