Wigan under line their title credentials

Wigan returned to league action this weekend as they welcomed Ashton-under-Lyne to Douglas Valley. The visitors pushed Wigan close in the earlier fixture between the two clubs with Wigan eventually coming out 14-24 winners in a feisty match. With that game fresh in the memories Wigan approached the game with renewed focus.

Wigan got off to a flying start when just 3 minutes into the game they worked their way into the Ashton 22. The ball was played out into the back line and Pat Melling took advantage of the space to finish in the corner.

Just minutes later Wigan again were camped in the Ashton 22. The ball was moved blind before finding the hands of Adam Stansbie. The young winger outpaced the covering defence with a good finish in the corner.

Ashton regrouped but couldn’t open up the Wigan defence and whilst the game settled down the home side were never really under any pressure.

The third try came courtesy of another Pat Melling break. The Wigan centre broke the line before finding Toby Harrison coming through on the burst.

Wigan’s fourth try sealed the bonus point win on the brink of half time. A quick tap was taken in by the pack, sucking the Ashton defence in. The ball was then played back across the park where Connor Matthews took the ball on the angle to go over under the sticks. Adam Stansbie converted. HT – 22-0

The second half commenced in much the same way as the first. From a lineout awarded deep in the Wigan half, the ball was played off the top to Mikey Bristow who spotted a gap. His mazey running turned the defence inside out and he went fully 60 yards to finish the try on his own. Adam Stansbie added the conversion.

Wigan continued to put pressure on Ashton throughout the second half but squandered a host of opportunities. It wasn’t until the final minute of the game that Sione Afu was finally able to burst through the defensive line to score the final try of the game. Wigan 34 -0 Ashton-under-Lyne

Wigan remain top of the league with a one point advantage over Ormskirk. Wigan’s next game is on the 16th March as they welcome North Manchester to Douglas Valley.
