Wigan feather the nest at top of the table

Wigan welcomed Warrington side, Eagle, to Douglas Valley this weekend after having a close fought 22-17 victory earlier in the season.

With the sides starting at opposite ends of the table the home crowd would have been forgiven for thinking that this would be a walkover, but Eagle showed spirit that belied their league position. It took good hands and good footwork for Wigan to break the deadlock as a Tom Hampson break took Wigan into good position. Joe Prior took up the charge, selling a dummy and cutting inside the last man to go over under the sticks. Adam Dwyer added the conversion.

Wigan were put under pressure time and again and it was only a series of penalties that allowed Wigan to get within striking distance again. Connor Matthews then showed his class by stepping his man and showing a clean pair of heels to go over under the sticks. Adam Dwyer added the conversion to give Wigan a 14-0 lead at half time.

With things tight at the top of the table Wigan needed nothing less than a bonus point win and with this in mind they set about upping the tempo. 10 minutes into the second half Wigan attacked from a lineout and played the ball out wide. Debutant Toby Harrison took the ball into space before putting Brad Makinson over in the corner. Adam Dwyer added the conversion.

Dwyer added more points to his tally 10 minutes later with a solo break up the middle of the park. Dwyer stepped his man then sold the full back a dummy to go over under the sticks. Dwyer converted his own try.

With the 4th try the bonus point was in the bag and Wigan were in buoyant mood and firmly in control. An attacking scrum on the 5 metre line was walked over and Wayne Bullough showed the patience and footwork to score the try.

With 5 minutes left, Pat Melling made a break from deep inside his own half. With the line at his mercy, Melling stumbled, allowing the recovering fullback to challenge for the ball. With Wigan arriving in numbers the Eagle player killed the ball and the referee awarded a penalty try.

With almost the final play of the game, Aseri Biutanaseva made an interception that opened up another chance for Wigan. Connor Matthews spotted space behind the full back and put a wonderfully weighted grubber kick into the corner. Eagle recovered the ball but a good tackle from Mikey Bristow wrapped up the man. The ball was released and Matthews was first to it, tipping the ball inside for Bristow to take over the line for the final try of the game. Adam Dwyer added the conversion. Final score 47-0.

With Ormskirk losing to Thornton-Cleveleys, Wigan now enjoy a 4 point lead at the top of the table.
