Wigan welcomed Fleetwood to Douglas Valley on a balmy October afternoon to play the 5th round of the ADM Premier Division. With both sides coming into the game with just one win a piece it was set to be a tight affair.
With conditions providing an excellent backdrop for running rugby both sides set about playing some enterprising rugby. The opening exchanges were back and forth but Wigan soon made the breakthrough.
A Fleetwood lineout on the halfway line was spilled and David Callaghan was on hand to pinch the ball for Wigan. The lively scrum half played the ball out to Joe Prior who, with the defence set up in attacking formation, spotted the need for a quick break away. Jonathan Blan entered the line at pace before quickly shipping the ball out to Adam Dwyer. Dwyer wasted no time in moving the ball to Connor Matthews who drew his man, before putting Conor Taylor away down the right wing. Taylor went through the gears and outpaced his man on the outside before selling a dummy to the fullback. The dummy did just enough to put the defender on the back foot and Taylor broke the tackle easily to go over for what would be the only try of the game. Billy Sheridan converted and Wigan took a match winning 7-0 lead.
The rest of the game played out in similar fashion but neither side quite had the cutting edge required to finish the game off. Wigan defended diligently in the dying moment of the second half and ran out deserved winners and leap frogged their opponents in the league table.
Wigan’s next match is at home to Oldham on Saturday 23rd October with kick off at 2.15pm.
